Walter Mayo’s first paddling memories originate when he was five years old sitting in the middle of an old Grumman canoe.
Over his life he’s dabbled in multiple paddling disciplines, but started guiding sea kayak tours in 2000 in the San Juan Islands in Washington State. Walter’s also guided in Hawaii, Florida, Yellowstone National Park Wyoming, and St. John USVI.
In 2005 on St. John, he started Hidden Reef Eco-Tours where his company specializes in kayak/snorkel tours. His NC based company Paddle NC has been operating in Hammocks Beach State Park and Carolina Beach State Park for the past two seasons offering rentals, tours, and instruction. Some of his accomplishments include multiple open water crossings and circumnavigating the island of St. John.
He is currently an ACA L4 coastal kayaking Instructor living in Carolina Beach NC.
Bill has been kayak and canoe camping for the past 15 years and believes that what you eat while camping does not have to be boring. He get his cooking inspiration from the renowned cookbook “Hey, I’d eat this at Home by Michael Gray" which offers a fresh and fearless approach to wilderness cooking.
